That’s all I’m asking for! Just one logical reason. I don’t want quotes from the Bible or the Quran, I can write a book as well and use it as proof for the existence of anything. I ask you to use reason and logic. Forget about your religions that did not exist for 99% of humanity’s existence on…
In your bio you say there’s a lack of morals, who defines what is right and wrong?
I’ve explained the morality question in my Frequently Asked Questions (http://iranianatheist.tumblr.com/FAQ#C10)
One thing I will tell you is, I’ll certainly not be getting my morals from a hate filled, misogynistic, homophobic, and intolerant book that is beyond outdated. Keep those religious texts out of it please for the sake of human rights.
Thank you for your answer on morality.
“I derive my morals based on what helps society and what bring joy and happiness for other people.”
“As non-believers we advance our views over time, and our understanding of what is right and wrong progresses as well.”
“My morals are based on the betterment of society and the positive that I can bring to other people.”
Regarding some of these points you stated, this renders morality subjective, ie over time it has and will change. For example, homosexuality was considered a mental disorders just a few decades ago, now its openly practiced globally. Another example is that as a social consensus in Nazi Germany, killing Jews was seen as a normal thing to do. However now we see killing any innocent human being as something wrong. As these morals are subjective and will change over time, then upon what moral basis can we condemn the things happening around the globe this very moment? For example, in some countries such as Norway, the Netherlands, the Australian Capital Territory and in 13 states in the US. Bestiality (the act of sexual intercourse with animals) is Legal. Another example is that there are organisations in the US where men are fighting for paedophilic rights
Now you may say that this is wrong, but upon what basis are you claiming this. If you say “This is wrong” those people can just turn around and say “Well, I think it’s right”. This is a very sad position to hold if you think about it, this means it really doesn’t matter what we do in life, because our destination is the same, 6 foot under eaten by worms and maggots and whatever else there may be. We’re just rearranged molecules that will turn to dust in essence. There’s no difference between Hitler and someone who gives billions in charity, because you’re just going to turn into worm buffet at the end of the day.
You talked about bringing happiness in society, well who defines what is right in society and what will bring joy and happiness for people? Because there’s always going to be a conflict of ideas.
If you say that “killing an innocent human being is wrong, always has, and always will be”. Then you’re claiming that killing is objectively wrong. The only thing you can anchor this is to something that transcends human subjectivity ie a creator. The only other options are:
Both social pressures and evolution provide no objective basis for morality as they both claim that our morality is contingent on changes: biological (morals will evolve like our hands, teeth and feet have) and social. Therefore morality cannot be binding, in other words true regardless of who believes in them.
Therefore without a creator there is no objective basis for morality. A creator as a concept is not subjective therefore having God as basis for morality makes them binding and objective, because God transcends human subjectivity.
